Family Values: Republican Style
By Byron A. Ellis
The Republicans and Evangelicals
have used family values as a political concept. Although the term is vague
and often has different meanings for different people, conservatives
understand the term to include abstinence, but you would not know that by
their embraced of unwed pregnancy.
The Republican family values also
include the promotion of traditional marriage and opposition to adultery.
However, many Republican leaders, including McCain, Gingrich, Thompson,
Giuliani, and others have had more than one marriage. So, what values are
they modeling?
Republican family values also
include opposition to abortion. They view the unborn child has a fundamental
individual right to life which cannot be infringed. However, they do not
view the life of those that they consider their enemies the same way; rather
the life of their enemies are expendable. They are comfortable annihilating
Iraqis, Palestinians, Pakistanis, and others without remorse. The
Republicans and evangelicals do not place the same value on all life.
Their family values do not include
the entire human race; it only includes a segment of the human race. This
segment was evident at their convention, which did not reflect America’s
diversity.
