The international community rightly called the proposed stoning by Iran of Ashtiani barbaric. The killing of Teresa Lewis by lethal injection on Thursday night by the state of Virginia is also barbaric. Unlike Iran, who at least temporarily suspended the death by stoning sentence as a response to worldwide criticism, the state of Virginia ignored criticisms and the arguments of death penalty opponents. Ms. Lewis did not kill her husband and stepson. Rather, two male conspirators perpetrated the crime. However, they were given life without parole. It is amusing to hear government officials claiming to follow Christ and yet be so callous to use human laws to terminate the life of another human. In Matthew 5:38-40, Jesus refers to an “Eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth,” from the Old Testament and tells us that we should not be vengeful and vindictive. In fact, Jesus wants us to be merciful towards our brothers and sisters. He desires from us mercy not sacrifice and if the authorities in Virginia knew Christ they would not have put Ms. Lewis to death. This infatuation of public officials with death and wars is unchristian and unhealthy to the nation. Thus, the actors of state sponsored executions are individually accountable to Christ.
