- China's First Presidential Visit to Central
America
- By Byron A. Ellis
Costa Rica, November 16, 2008-According
to Costa Rica’s
La Nación, for the first time in the history of Central America it will
host a Chinese president. China’s president, Hu Jintao, will arrive in Costa
Rica this afternoon at 3:00 PM Costa Rica’s time.
Hu’s visit is possible due to the
new relationship recently established between the two countries.
China’s incursion in Latin America
is another strategic move to gain a commercial foothold for supplying
finished goods and acquiring raw materials.
One of the things you notice when
visiting Latin America is the dearth of American made automobiles.
In inquiring why Latin Americans do
not buy vehicles from their northern neighbor, the answer is always that
American cars are too expensive and unreliable.
However, the United States should
not to concede the markets in Latin America to Asia; the U.S. must compete
for those markets.
China will establish a Confucius
Institute in Costa Rica and has already donated a new National Stadium to
Costa Rica.
Hu Jintao brings with him eleven
accords to establish closer relationship with Costa Rica; which includes
scientific and petroleum cooperation between the two countries.
It is important for the new Obama
administration to seek markets for American products in Latin America.
Additionally, the American auto industry must make inroads in Latin
America's auto market. Detroit could establish manufacturing facilities in
Central America to provide economic and reliable vehicles to the region.
