The rulers of Iran had three choices, acquiesce to a new election, suppress the demonstrators with violence, or negotiate an amicable solution to the crisis. The two former choices were opposite extremes of the spectrum; the latter choice was the most optimal. It would have allowed the rulers to not reveal their ruthlessness. Iran’s rulers approach to peaceful demonstrations by it's citizens is an ominous sign. If they were capable of injuring their own citizens to maintain power, what would they do to other nations with a nuclear bomb? They’ve demonstrated that they cannot be trusted with power. Therefore, the international community cannot believe their rhetoric about peaceful use of nuclear technology. It is time for the international community to close rank an isolate the Iranian government. A plausible approach is for Israel to quickly resolve the Palestinian (Hamas) issue and any pending issues with Lebanon (Hezbollah) and Syria (Golan Heights). Resolving these issues would integrate Palestine, Lebanon and Syria into the community of peaceful nations. Thus, reducing their linkages to the pariah leadership of Iran. The international community should refuse to trade with the illegitimate and brutal Iranian regime. The Saudis and other Gulf oil-producing nations could increase crude oil output to make up for Iranian production of crude oil. Let’s tell the rulers of Iran that they’ve reached the end of their game. And, the first step is to isolate them economically, and let them envision the final step with apprehension and dread.
