Israel’s focus on Iran’s nuclear pursuit is misplaced; they should be focusing on the rise of the Taliban in nuclear Pakistan. Nuclear Taliban/Al Qaeda is a far more ominous threat than nuclear Iran could ever be. History indicates that Iran is not an aggressive nation and that Israel is far more aggressive than Iran. Moreover, that Iran is a rational nation. The Taliban and Al Qaeda, however, are brutally irrational and will no hesitate to use weapons of mass destruction against Israel. Thus, the Taliban/Al Qaeda nuclear threat dwarfs any imaginary Iranian threat. The international community, including Iran and Israel, must collaborate to reduce this symbolic and real threat, which could affect any nation. The international community cannot afford to commit another Bushism, expending war resources on the wrong threat. The United States needs a coalition of nations to confront the looming potential of a nuclear Taliban/Al Qaeda and cannot afford any more distractions in the Middle East. Furthermore, it is time for Israel to treat Palestine respectfully and move toward the two-state solution. Additionally, Israel must loosen the economic stranglehold on Gaza. Likewise, it is time for Hamas to seek political and not violent outcomes. Violence has not benefited Gazans. The international community must also seek to alleviate suffering in developing nations, such as Pakistan and Afghanistan. In addition, it is paramount for the West to counter its image as anti Islamic. However, if Pakistan cannot or is unwilling to control Taliban/Al Qaeda violence, then the international community must be ready to counteract, without delay and with overwhelming force, any potential threat from a nuclear Taliban/Al Qaeda.
