Considering Alternate Solutions to the Oil Spill
By Byron A. Ellis – May 04, 2010

It may be possible to use large funnels equipped with vacuum pumps to skim the crude oil from the ocean surface. The surface crude would be vacuumed into floating tankers.

British Petroleum (BP) should consider building large funnels equipped with vacuum pumps that could be attached to large floating tankers.  The device would suck the oil and sea water into the tanker. The water in the tanker would be immediately drained off leaving only crude oil.

The contraption would look like the sketch below and each tanker could be equipped with many of these devices.
