The West Quick to Condemn GuineaIt is not surprising how quick Secretary of State Hillary Clinton raised the drumbeat of “criminality of the greatest degree” against leaders of the Guinean government, and deservedly so. Troubling, however, is Ms. Clinton’s biasness towards Israel’s documented crimes against humanity. The United States is quick to argue that Israeli leaders should not be charged for crimes committed against Gazans. Perhaps what the United States is truly arguing is that Western leaders are immune from crimes against humanity, but Africans and other brown peoples are not. This unequal legal standard has been prevalent in the United States, resulting in more black and browns people in American prisons. Clearly, the Guinean soldiers and police that committed the horrific rapes and crackdown during last moth pro-democracy rally should be held accountable. However, unlike Israel leadership, Guinea’s military leadership has pledged to cooperate with the United Nation’s inquiry. The Jethro Project believes that if justice advocated by the West is biased, Western justice will be perceived by the rest of the world as meaningless. Therefore, any nation that commits crimes against humanity must be accountable and the United States and the West devalue justice and validates extremists views when they shield Israel from accountability.
